An Alternative to Tea and Coffee
Coffee may be one of the most celebrated beverages on the planet, but it doesn’t always agree with everyone. Coffee can be especially unhealthy for those who cannot tolerate drinking it black and prefer to add tons of sugar to mask the taste. If you find yourself in this camp, you may be wondering about satisfying alternatives to coffee.
Tea can be a great alternative to coffee, but may not be robust enough to satisfy a coffee craving. Additionally, most types of tea still have caffeine and still warrant you looking for a substitute if you are anxiety prone, pregnant, or just want to avoid caffeine.
If you are looking for a hot drink alternative to tea and coffee in the morning, I would suggest giving Coffig a try.
What is Coffig?
Coffig is a is a single ingredient, coffee alternative made from roasted and ground black mission figs. This drink is much easier on the stomach compared to coffee, yet still tastes very appealing.

Who is Coffig For?
People who fall into these categories should consider giving Coffig a try:
- Those who are pregnant or nursing
- Those who struggle with anxiety from caffeine
- Those who have caffeine sensitivity
- Those who want a healthy substitute to tea and coffee
- Those who just love the taste of fig.
If you enjoy coffee but are generally trying to cut back, Coffig may help you be satisfied with less coffee. Since Coffig only contains figs and nothing else, you can pretty much drink as much as you want.
What does Coffig Taste like?
Many reviewers on Amazon suggest that Coffig is the best tasting alternative they’ve tried. Because Coffig is roasted, the taste is robust and more comparable to coffee than tea. However, the consistency of the brewed beverage is very much like tea (or a Chemex, if you are familiar with that).
If you are expecting it to taste exactly like coffee, you will be disappointed. However, the general taste and feel of Coffig will certainly remind you of coffee. The taste of fig is prominent, although I consider this a pleasant and interesting feature. You will recognize the taste if you have tried Fig Newtons before. Coffig has a very slight sweetness to it but requires sugar if you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side.
How do you prepare Coffig?
Coffig can be prepared just as you would tea or coffee, depending on the form that you purchase.
If you use the ground variety, feel free to use any of your coffee makers that can filter out the grounds or a teapot with a mesh infuser. The french press is ideal for this because it allows the grounds to be fully immersed for your preferred duration, resulting in a richer brew. You will want to use half a teaspoon (or a bit more if desired) per cup of boiling water.
The bagged variety is steeped just like tea. Simply pour boiling water on top and set a timer. The recommended steep/brewing time is 4-7 minutes, although you may increase the time as desired.
After preparing, you can add cream and sugar or other flavorings if you like.
Where to buy Coffig?
Coffig is available on Amazon in two different forms. The boxed packaging contains individually bagged portions (similar to teabags) and should be prepared just as you would prepare tea. The ground form comes in a larger bag for you to measure out each serving size. The ground form is more cost efficient.
If you really enjoy the taste of fig, I suggest you pair a hot cup of Coffig with Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars on Amazon. When my wife and I first tried Coffig, we both craved these snack bars as well and enjoy the combination.
In Summary
Coffig is a clever substitute for other hot drinks for your morning routine or any time throughout the day. Although it can’t exactly mimic coffee, it gets much closer than most all other alternatives. I highly recommend giving it a try.
If you are a frequent reader of this site, you would be aware of my intense passion for coffee. However, I have my limits and generally work to avoid too much caffeine. Coffig satisfies my need for a rich and delicious hot beverage that I can enjoy guilt free throughout the day.
For me, Coffig, coffee, and tea all work well in my day. However, if I ever needed to completely cut out tea and coffee for any reason, it’s really nice to know that something like Coffig exists.

I just read on Amazon that the Coffig individual bags may be used up to 3 times! I did not know this! I have been enjoying Coffig, but am curious about re-using the bags. Have you done this and, if so, have you increased the steeping time in uses past the first?
Joseph
I didn’t know that! I probably would increase the steep time to keep the flavor prominent. Thanks for the insight.

Can the coffig be used in an espresso machine?
Joseph
Coffig wouldn’t really work in an espresso machine because it is ground too coarsely and wouldn’t provide enough resistance to build up pressure for a good shot. It also needs to steep a bit longer than a shot of espresso would normally take to pull. It would work in an AeroPress, however.
